It is very difficult to believe a weather forecaster telling us of 300k or 500k flights when outside there is rain! But David Masson was adamant that conditions would get good. Sure enough, by midday the cold front had moved far enough away to allow cumulus cloud to appear. Those that launched were soon back on the ground but eventually conditions started improving; not before some had more than 2 launches or re-started their engines within the start zone.

But the day did not live up to expectations with thermals not very strong or far apart. At Justin’s de-brief the following day (an Enterprise tradition) it was evident that wave was proving a major factor in the thermal structure, providing lines of lift but, as ever, areas of sink. Nevertheless, Simon Marriot’s Nimbus 4D managed 330k, next farthest was Justin with 253k, plus 7 other pilots exceeding 200k. Sam Fisher flying an LS4 final glided from Didcot, just making it home!

Simon’s account of “How I Did It”, as he collected the Day Winner’s prize, proved very entertaining; particularly the mention of spotting 2 Asda lorries on the M4 when very low and deciding to follow them as they would provide sufficient heat to keep their Nimbus 4 in the air!

Total distance flown by 22 pilots was 3,851k (averaging 175k per pilot) with 17 getting home.

Originally Tuesday was expected to be better than Monday!! But of course life doesn’t work out like that and it would have been pretty impossible to beat Monday. Unlike yesterday, the day started well but as predicted high cloud came in somewhat limiting the lift but not by much, then the wind became more of a factor. The furthest west reached was Sherbourne but more did better to the east with Ely being the furthest but more landout/engine starts. No-one made it to either coast.

Justin achieved 655k, David Masson 602k and Paul Kite 558k. 3 more exceeded 400k and 8 over 300k. David had the highest points but, remembering Enterprise rules, the Day’s Winner bottle went to second placed Paul Kite.

Total distance flown by 23 pilots was 7,871k (averaging 342k per pilot) with 13 getting home.

After such an excellent first day and the promise of 2 more very good days on Monday and Tuesday, it was felt best to set a 3 hour limit on today’s flying. The weather also suggested this the best option and so it turned out. Those that set off early got the best out of the day. The wind was quite a feature becoming 20/25 knots making flying extremely bumpy and controlling gliders a challenge. Cloud base was around 2,500ft and a number didn’t make it back due to the increasing wind and cloud cover.

The furthest distance of 178k and reaching 5 TPs was flown by Justin, winning him the day, again. 5 others exceeded 100k.  But Competition Enterprise rules state that a pilot can only be a Day Winner once so today David McCarthy and Sandy Hawkyard collected the bottle being just 36 points behind Justin in their Duo Discus.

We were promised very good weather by our weather guru, David Masson, mainly in two areas; to the west as far as North Hill and to the east north of the London TMA to Tibenham. Paul Kite, the task setter, set a number of turning points in the two respective directions. The aim to yo-yo from one direction to the other via Didcot.
The weather lived up to expectations with 3 pilots exceeding 650k, 6 over 500k and 6 over 400k. Special mention went to Adrian Emck who flew 502.6 in his Ka6E. There was talk of very good thermals but some nasty gaps, a steady 9+ knots to cloud base was experienced by at least one glider. Both North Hill and Tibenham were reached with very few landouts or engine use.
Provisional results show Justin Wills and Andrew Reid joint leaders, 651k and 560k respectively but Andrew twigged the value of yo-yoing east/west so achieving 8 TPs against Justins 6. Paul Kite covered most distance 673k but failed to read his task rules and only reached 5 TPs! Final results will be issued shortly as there are a few airspace issues to resolve.
